Book Anticipation {or Waiting is Hard, People!}

{I haven't participated in Booking Through Thursday in ages! But I happened to be searching for some post ideas and ran across this question from a year ago. Thought it would be fun to join in again!}
Do you still get excited about new books as you did when you were little? In general? New books in particular, like from a favorite author? Or do you look at all new, unread books with the same level of anticipation?

YES! I still get excited about new books!

I chose that particular picture above because it features a book that I anticipated for months and months and MONTHS before it came out. My patience was wearing very, very thin, I do admit. But! It was so worth the wait, because it is such a delightful story! Based on one of my very favoritest books ever, it is full of heartache, happiness, and real moments. I have reread it several times and each time just makes me love it more. If you haven't read it, you really should remedy that, by the by.

*ahem* But this post is not about Dear Mr. Knightley. (Although clearly I could gush about it if you wanted! ;)

13206900Anyhoo! So yes. I still get excited. I anticipate new arrivals long before their publishing dates arrive. I count down the months and/or the days. Sometimes even the hours! (Confession: I have stayed up until the wee hours just so I could download an ebook as soon as it was available. Of course, I probably would have been up that late anyway, but that's beside the point.)

Yet I also look forward to any book that is new to me! I still *happy dance* when I have a book waiting for me that I have not read yet, regardless if it's been out for years or just for a few hours.

I will admit that favorite authors who have new books coming out make me a bit more excited though. Like Katherine Reay's The Bronte Plot! Or Marissa Meyer's Winter! Or....lots of others as well. (Although I do think that Winter is the highest on my anticipation list. I need it like NOW. *impatient sigh*) (Also. Isn't that cover amazing?! How long until November again? *woefully contemplates the calendar*)

*whispers* And sometimes I haven't had to wait near as long. Because a certain author who goes by the name of Katherine Reay once gifted me a copy of her book a few months before it was published! (I know, right?! That solidified her on my favorite author list. Not that she was in any danger of losing that position, but.... :)

So basically, all books are worth getting excited over! At least for me. While I wait very impatiently for some (still looking at you, Winter), others I only have to wait a few hours until I can get home and start it. Either way, I have to say that most of the books I'm anticipating especially a lot leave me very happy once I'm finished. Because BOOKS. Are. Awesome. The end.

What about you? Do you get as excited as I do? Or are you all adult about it? :D

  1. Heck, yes, I get excited about books. But then, I suppose our Twitter, blogging and other convos have already told you that about me. ;)

    1. Somehow I just knew you'd understand me, Rissi! And yes, our many convos kind of clued me in to this awesomeness about you. ;) Yay for bookish excitement!

      November is truly the month for books this year. So many seem to be coming out then. CANNOT wait for The Bronte Plot!!!

  2. This post is so fun, Kara!! I can totally relate to your thoughts on bookish anticipation. (And in your desperate need for Winter, 'cause I'm right there with you, friend!! Why is November so far away? *sigh*)

    Go, #BookBesties! :D (Rissi, you're fab for coming up with that perfect hashtag!)

  3. You are not alone in your book excitement! I count down the days!!

    So I have all the books for Lunar Chronicles waiting for me and I've decided I'm going to re-read the first two and then the ones I need to read right before Winter comes out. Then I can snatch Winter right up and not have to wait forever (which happens with every other series for me!) :)

    1. Jamie: You have more willpower than I, my friend. I wish I'd've waited to read the whole series until now because this waiting is HARD. But I've loved every book so far, so clearly I couldn't actually wait do that. *sigh* Why do series have to be so awesome and the books published so far apart?!

      Yay for bookish excitement! I love anticipating books! (When the publishing dates aren't too far away that is. ;)

  4. I experienced this waiting anticipation for the first time last year, actually. As a kid, I didn't read a lot of series that hadn't already been completed. The only one that really would matter was Harry Potter, and when the last two came out, I was too busy with school and other responsibilities to be seriously focused on release dates. I'm a big fan of classics and a very slow reader, so most of my favorite authors are either dead or writing faster than I'm reading. So, Kelley Armstrong's Age of Legends series is what did it for me. Waited a year for the second one, finished it in two days, and now I have to wait more than a year for the next. (It's not even scheduled for release yet!) This is torture; I don't know how you stand it.

    1. Oh Hannah. It's terrible, isn't it?! This is the precise reason that I have a rule for myself not to start a series until all the books are published. Clearly I broke it with The Lunar Chronicles. Oh how I broke it! Because this waiting is interminable. *heaves a big sigh*

      But for most regular stand alones I do anticipate the books, especially from favorite authors, yet the wait isn't that hard. Because I've not read anything in the story yet, so I haven't gotten fully invested. Therefore I can just anticipate and read other fun books meanwhile. :)

      (Note to self: You MUST enforce your series rule much more in the future! Learn from your mistakes, Kara. Learn from your mistakes.)

    2. My problem was I didn't know it would be a series until it finished abruptly, and I was like, "Wait, what?"

      Good luck with your waits! May the pain of wait be eased with many another good book. :)

    3. Aw, surprises like that aren't always the happy sort, are they? I hope your pain is over soon! Or at least that they give you an idea of when to expect the next in the series. The not-knowing would be awful! Even if a publishing date is a long time away, at least one can still count down the time. Which sort of helps. Kind of. :)

      And thanks! My biggest wait right now is just until November. Which is fast approaching the way this year is zipping along!
