The Wild Orchid by Cameron Dokey - Since I seem to be on a fairy tale re-telling kick recently, I decided to go with Mulan's story. (Truthfully, I found the book used, for a great price, and couldn't leave it there. ;) I've been curious about Ms. Dokey's books for a while now and I have to say she didn't disappoint me! Mulan feels more real than just a simple fairy tale. And while things happen pretty quickly, I was rapt enough to be unable to put it down. Most definitely a great story! And now I'm anxious to try some of her other re-tellings. :)
I read Pies and Prejudice last year, and really enjoyed it! In fact, I'm reading the first book of the series right now. It centers on Little Women instead of P&P, and the girls are much younger -- 12 -- but it's still fun. I found it at a used book store and realized that these clean, fun books are totally something I want my kids to read when they're older.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read the others in the series, but now I want to. I actually found my copy of this one in a used bookstore and couldn't pass it up! I'm so glad to find someone else who enjoyed it, Hamlette. And who doesn't mind reading middle grade like me! :)
DeleteAnd yes, I so agree with you there. Clean, fun books like this are well worth finding and letting your children (or nieces and nephews) enjoy them. It'll definitely go on my list of recommended reads for younger girls.
Aw, these both sound really cute. Thanks for sharing, Kara - and I'm glad you finally tried some of Cameron's books. :)
ReplyDeleteThey are very cute, Rissi! :) And I'm so happy I've tried one of her books too. Now I definitely want to find more of them! I admit to being doubtful that I'd like her books, but I'm no longer of that opinion now. She did a great job with Mulan.
