Review: Where Trains Collide by Amber Stokes {Blog Tour + Giveaway}

I am SO pleased to be a part of this blog tour! Especially for this particular story. It's been a long time in coming, but oh so worth the wait! I also have the privilege of sharing a deleted scene with my lovely readers as well. So without further ado, let's get to all the fun, shall we? :)

Review

To say that I'd been anticipating this release would be putting it very mildly! And it was definitely worth waiting for. :) There is such sweetness in watching these two characters find each other again. It's not an easy journey for the two of them, but oh so wonderfully real!

It was Trisha I connected to immediately. You'd wonder how I, being an adult long beyond college age, could understand her fears and uncertainties, probably. But I do! Sometimes I wonder if we ever truly get life figured out because just when we think we have it, something gets thrown in to push us a bit off course. That's where Trisha is at the beginning of the novella. Uncertain who she even is at the moment and so full of this pull of something that she doesn't understand. It's a very insecure and precarious feeling! And so she throws caution to the wind and runs away for the weekend.

But then. Oh but then! When Paul enters the picture, I empathized with all the awkward she felt. And their initial conversations are a struggle. (Not due to bad writing! On the contrary, Ms. Stokes allows the reader to feel precisely what the characters are going through at these moments.) Yet as we watch the two continue to get pulled together, things begin to change. There's still fears and uncertainties there, yet slowly they begin to open up and be their true selves with one another. And that's when all the delight begins to happen!

The romance bits are, naturally, some of my favorites. ;) The shortness of their reconnection is enhanced by their past which is felt in all the unspoken moments between them. It's an undeniable connection that neither has ever let go of completely. And when they look at each other....ah my heart! There is so much there in the air between them and it kept me turning page after page to see where the next conversation would go!

All in all, this was a lovely way to spend a couple hours. If you're looking for a story that's short yet full of delightful romance that will make your heart smile, this one is perfect for you! So what are you waiting for? Go forth and buy it! :)

Deleted Scene

If you take a look at the Pinterest board for Where Trains Collide, you’ll see some pins featuring scenes from Silver Falls State Park. In the first draft of the story, Paul and Trisha headed north for an outing at the park. They end up going a different direction in the final version, but here’s a glimpse at that deleted scene…

***

It didn’t take them long at all to come to the edge of the ravine and catch their first glimpse of what had to be the South Falls, the main tourist attraction on this trail of falls. The invisible forces of nature shoved a ton of water off the edge of the cliff to their left, sending water droplets free-falling into a perfectly beautiful dive to meet the rest of the water pooled below.

Trisha’s cheeks hurt from smiling as she took in the view. She could feel the life here. The vibrancy shimmering in the damp air. The miracle of H2O moving and shivering and falling and keeping its form without ever having a shape.

She pulled out her iPhone and snapped picture after picture, until Paul nudged her with his arm. “Now who’s holding us up? You know, we can get closer.”

She eagerly followed after him, his red shirt like a beacon bringing her back to the path as she scanned the fall foliage and ever-greenery around them, pausing every so often to take more pictures.
Leaves beneath them. Sunlight like an arrow through the trees across the ravine. People crossing the cute wooden bridge below. All ended up on her phone. She couldn’t wait to share about this on her blog. Not that a million other nature buffs hadn’t already written about this place.

It didn’t matter. She just had to share.

She was just getting ready to stop and pull out her new journal to jot down some thoughts, when they came to a curve in the trail that would lead them back around behind the waterfall. The dirt of the trail became a sludgy mud, likely from a combination of the waterfall and earlier rain.

But if that little five-year-old girl ahead of them could happily skip around it, well, it couldn’t be so bad.

Trisha gave up on the journal and turned her attention to skirting the bigger puddles. The pounding of the water became louder as they drew closer to the little cave-like portion of the trail behind the waterfall.

As she and Paul approached a particularly large puddle, a middle-aged man came at it from the other side. Paul stepped as close to the rail on their right as he could get. Trisha stalled for a moment, until he gripped her hand and pulled her up right next to him.

The man nodded in thanks as he passed in front of them, his arm brushing their sides as he shuffled around the worst of the mud. He had moved on several paces up the trail before Trisha realized that she and Paul hadn’t budged, even though the coast was clear.

And Paul hadn’t let go of her hand.

She didn’t know what to think of that. So she didn’t think. She just gave his arm a little push and let him guide them safely around the muck and under the rocky outcropping until they stood hand in hand directly behind the waterfall.

Mist hovered around them. A group laughed as they passed by, likely not as good as Paul at avoiding the puddles in the path. Trisha didn’t look back to confirm her suspicions. She couldn’t drink in enough of the view before them.

In the space between the safety of the ledge above and the depths of the pool beneath, the falling water grew thin and stretched in a living window. Gold autumn leaves glistened and glowed from the trees beyond. A treasure veiled from reach.

But somehow, she and Paul were better for simply knowing it was there. Knowing that such a sight existed from this impossible, enchanting angle.

His fingers tightened around hers.

Trisha blinked, and the waterfall changed from a solid, shimmery thing to a million different trails following gravity to their inevitable end. Unwitting water colliding with water that had been there before.

Falling. Colliding.

Inevitable.

Audiobook Review: The Uncloaked Trilogy by J. Rodes {Blog Tour + Giveaway}

I am so pleased to participate in this Blog Tour today! Because this series is definitely worth getting the word out about. I was intrigued by the premise and once I dived into the pages, well...! Hopefully you'll get the chance to see for yourself, once you purchase your own copy! ;) I listened to the audiobooks and they were excellently done, for the record.

The Uncloaked {book one}
I was not expecting to be utterly swept up into the story so quickly! But Ms. Rodes hits the ground running in chapter one and lets the reader rest very little throughout the rest of the book. It feels so close to where life is currently in our country and how rapidly such devastating changes could actually become true. Considering all the heartache that these characters seem to about constantly endure, even before said changes show their true colors, I was so grateful that Braxton and Eliza's friendship was sweet and fairly uncomplicated. Each time they had a cute moment together, it allowed me to take a breather and just imagine being a teenager again. Yet this story is not for the faint of heart. Awful, terrible things begin happening and our characters have much to endure. And then there's that cliffhanger ending! Let's just say it's a good thing that I had book two at the ready immediately.

I will have to admit that Braxton bugged me several times during the story. I know he's a teenager with all his teen angst, but I got rather irritated at his flip-flopping back and forth. He could never seem to land on exactly what he felt about any of the changes happening in his world. A little bit of that I can understand, but when one particular, obvious awful thing happened he still couldn't decide! I was grateful that by the end, he finally seemed to settle a little bit. Book two helped my feelings about him as well.

Tearing the Veil {book two}
I was hoping for more answers to all my questions left over from book one and I did get a few. But of course, more questions just seemed to get asked and fewer answered! Which, naturally, required that I keep reading. Not a hardship, let me just say! ;) We pick back up with Braxton and I was pleased that he seemed a bit more settled in this book. Plus we get to know Hannah, Eliza's little sister. Now that Braxton has matured, Hannah gets to take over all his immature decision making! But luckily she's got Braxton to look out for her, even if she doesn't want him to. She bugged me a few times, but I quickly got over it.

The tension only rises during this middle story. I confess that there were several times I had to put the book down just so I could remind myself that this wasn't actually happening in real life! Kudos to Ms. Rodes for her incredible ability to write so life-like. Evil continues to run rampant through the story and it takes the courageous few to choose Truth over all the lies. Yet again, this book continues the adrenaline-pumping, uneasy bits, but surrounds them with small tinges of hope that refuse to give up. And that hope is so worth fighting for, as our characters come to realize. And that ending...!

Charging the Darkness {book three}
Wow. That's about all I can say about this final book in the trilogy! The same edge-of-your-seat tension held me captive from beginning to end. So many things happening and unexpectedly! I tried to imagine where I thought Ms. Rodes was going to take us, but, of course, I was wrong. Hope and forgiveness are incredibly powerful and should never be underestimated or thought impossible! This last book definitely cements this series as top notch and worth reading, in my opinion. :)

I was SO happy that my quibbles with a couple of the characters in the first two books were gone! Genuine maturity arrived and I was firmly on their side as harsh decisions were forced upon them. As per the first two books, the evil and darkness has continued to escalate, which only makes Truth and Hope shine so much the brighter! As each of the characters work through their individual journeys, I was blown away by their growth and determination to do right.

This entire series is well worth reading, my friends! This final book is proof of that, but in order to get to this one, you have to first read the other two. ;) So get to it! I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Review: Love, Lace, and Minor Alterations by V. Joy Palmer {Blog Tour + Giveaway}

30627238
This was a cute story! Mostly. There's a lot of mess in Izze's life and her journey to get it all figured out made me smile in some parts and cringe in others. She doesn't always make the best decisions, but then who does? (Certainly not me.) She was always willing to admit she was wrong once she discovered it and do all she could to correct the mistake. I really appreciated her ability to bounce back no matter how far she had fallen! And Miles, her "nemesis" turned love interest, added much depth to the story. Especially as we get to see his perspective every once in a while. He keeps Izze on her toes and causes her to take a look at her life and decide what she really wants.

Their chemistry is pretty great, right from the beginning. The attraction between them is more or less immediate, even if Izze refuses to acknowledge it. Then they proceed to drive each other crazy! :) Theirs is a bickering relationship, which means we get lots of back and forth between them as they discuss just about anything. I think they tend to be a bit too alike in thinking they're always right, so both have to swallow a few hard pills during the course of the book. Which is good for them! They have a lot of growing to do, and learning to really trust someone else. Vulnerability is never easy, so I could sympathize with their fears.

Yet I have to confess that there were a lot of times when the horrible things that Izze would say to Miles or how she would treat him made me wonder what he saw in her. He decides pretty quickly that he loves her and stays steady in that much of the rest of the story, which is very commendable! But I couldn't see what it was that he loved so much. She tends to be extremely dramatic in everything and there were several times I got annoyed. I wanted to like her because I knew she had high walls protecting her heart due to pain in her past, yet even as she spoke of growing and changing for the better, I could never actually see it. It felt more like she was telling me, but not showing me and I wanted so much more for her. My feelings never fully invested in her journey, there was always a slight detachment from the story, which disappointed me. One thing that I definitely loved about Izze though? Her love of books! That bit just made me very happy.

So! Bottom line for me is that I enjoyed the story overall but definitely struggled in liking Izze most of the time. It's a pretty quick and easy read though, with lots of sweet moments, which helped to alleviate my frustration somewhat. Plus I really liked the writing style Ms. Palmer used! So I'd like to try another book of hers, perhaps about some of those intriguing secondary characters. (Pretty please, Ms. Palmer? :)

Lena's Triple Trick-or-Treat Cover Reveal {+ Giveaway!}

Today I get to share some pretty new covers with all you lovely people! I figured it was high time for something a little different around here and when Amber asked if I'd be interested, I said 'absolutely'. :D

So! Before we get to the covers themselves, I figured I should mention that I haven't read two of these books yet, but I did read Songstone back a few years ago. I just have to say that I definitely like this new cover much better than the old one. And now I'm intrigued enough to want to try Haunting Joy: Book 1 and Haunting Joy: Book 2. The covers for those two are pretty eye-catching! Let's see what you think...

All three together are pretty striking, right?? :) I do love those crisp colors...

About the books

In celebration of Lena Goldfinch’s upcoming release, HAUNTING JOY: BOOK 2, she’s revealing three brand-new book covers! The two HAUNTING JOY books are light paranormal stories, and SONGSTONE is a fantasy romance. All three books are sweet—and slightly spine-tingling—young adult reads, perfect for cozy autumn nights!

HAUNTING JOY: BOOK 1

“A sweet and charming ghost story that completely won me over.”
—Lena Coakley, Witchlanders

Joy’s new dress has a secret—one with a little supernatural history, one that’s a little more than she expected.

It all starts one ordinary afternoon, when seventeen-year-old Joy tries on some thrift-store clothes. The little white dress fits perfectly. Trouble is, now it won’t leave her alone. Soon Joy is swept up in an extraordinary journey to help a ghost complete some unfinished business.

If only that didn’t involve Joy driving through dangerous intersections...
Or calling up her high-school crush, Nick...
Or getting stuck in a cemetery after dark.

Just how much is Joy willing to risk to uncover the truth?

HAUNTING JOY: BOOK 2

Joy’s story continues with another ghost, this time a boy who seems intent on disrupting her senior year…

SONGSTONE

“An original fantasy world inhabited by superstitious tribal nations and intriguingly developed characters.”
—Serena Chase, USA Today’s Happy Ever After blog

A dark, twisty tale of sorcery, tummy-tingling romance, and adventure, inspired by the folklore of New Zealand's Māori people.

Kita can meld song into stone—a skill called “storytelling,” which is greatly honored in a world with no written word. But Kita is slave to a sorcerer who practices black magic using drops of her blood. She fears he’ll use her beautiful gift for a killing spell, so she conceals it. Yet each day, his magic tightens around her neck like a rope.

Then Pono, a young journeyman, arrives from the other side of the island. He’s come to fulfill a pact between their villages: to escort a storyteller back to his village. Finally, in Pono, Kita sees her one slim chance at freedom—and she’ll risk her life to take it.

Review: Love Everlasting by Julie Lessman {Blog Tour + Giveaway}

31554850
I had been eagerly anticipating this book ever since I first read the synopsis for it. Not to mention everyone and their sister has been gushing over book one of the series, Isle of Hope. But it wasn't until I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Lessman in person a couple months ago that my impatient nature began showing itself. After hearing her speak on the personal reasons that inspired her to write this series (I love knowing the background stories which galvanize an author to begin writing), I knew that October couldn't get here fast enough. Now it's here, I finally got the book in my hands, and I loved it! I think you will too. :)

Firstly, it's those characters who pull me in (as usual). I loved Shannon and her sweet and caring nature, who can also be bold enough to stand her ground when the occasion calls for it. (Although I will admit that I wasn't as big a fan of her nickname. It's used constantly and kind of bugs me, but that's just a personal quibble.) The close relationship she has with her family is wonderful to watch play out. The O'Bryen's are awesome! They all clearly love one another dearly and even when one makes a mistake, they confront the issue with love and grace as needed and move on. When problems arise, they're all guaranteed to do whatever they can to make things better, they look after each other fiercely. They actually remind me a lot of the McKenna clan from Dani Pettrey's Alaskan Courage series, who just happen to be one of my very favorite fictional families!

Then there's Sam, aka Dr. Love. He's got the biggest amount of growing to do because he starts out with layers that are in desperate need of peeling back. As we're reminded (a little too) frequently, he's a player and perfectly happy to be one! I don't think we have enough nice guys in fiction, but I do have to admit that there is just something about a bad boy who gets redeemed, isn't there? That's precisely who Sam is at the beginning, a bad boy with a tender heart that he keeps hidden. Watching as Shannon slowly batters down his walls, almost unbeknownst to him (or her either), is hilarious at times and awfully swoony at others! Because can I just say that the chemistry between those two is off the charts! Yet the very best part is how they inspire each other to change and become better versions of themselves. Neither are without fault though, so their relationship requires a lot of patience and grace from each other.

I can't forget to mention Tess and Ben's relationship because we spend a good deal of time with them as well. I gathered that there is some backstory from book one which I haven't read, but Ms. Lessman provides just the right amount of indication of what happened to keep me from being confused. I had no trouble jumping right into their part of the story, which is full of enough angst and swoons and amusement to make any reader happy. I do have to confess that their storyline didn't hold my attention quite so fully as Sam and Shannon's though, and I would often skim through some of their chapters. I still enjoyed getting their perspectives though! Especially when the O'Bryen's were all together.

Chemistry-laden swooniness plus character growth plus really wonderful writing equals a delightful story so worth your time! I highly recommend this one, friends. SO good! :)

**I received a complimentary copy via Singing Librarian Books in exchange for my honest review.

New Cover Reveal :: How a Star Falls by Amber Stokes {Plus a Giveaway}

The always lovely Amber (from Seasons of Humility) is debuting a new cover for one of her novellas today! And I get the privilege of sharing it with all of you. :) I read this sweet story last year (here's my review) and while I liked the fantasy feel of the original cover, I admit that this new cover feels more true to the adorableness of the story. (Plus who doesn't like a cute couple cover, I ask you?! ;) Incidentally, I can't believe that this story has been out for an entire year already! Time does fly, doesn't it?

A Note From the Author

A year ago today (November 18th), my little star story, How a Star Falls, landed on Amazon. I’m thrilled to celebrate the anniversary of its release with you by introducing a brand-new cover (where the hero, Derrick, makes an appearance) and sharing a fun giveaway with prizes from some of my favorite Etsy shops!

If you journeyed with Derrick and Brielle when their story first released, thank you for allowing them into your heart. And if this will be your first time meeting them, I hope you’ll be encouraged by their story and reminded of the hope of Psalm 138:8: “The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me.”

Blessings through life’s seasons!
~Amber

Isn't it sweet? Derrick and Brielle are cute, of course, but I also rather enjoy the sun setting behind them. It gives it an evening or dusk kind of feel, and since they meet at that time of day how perfect! Plus the colors are muted and wistful, which suits this story to a T. I like this cover a great deal, I admit and it fits so well with Amber's other novellas, so win win! :) Also, I just have to mention that if you haven't read this little story yet, you must remedy that soon. And then check out While You're Awake as well! Amber's stories are delightful, you won't be disappointed, I promise. :)

New Cover Reveal :: The Seahorse Legacy by Serena Chase {Plus a Giveaway!}

Hello dear readers! I am excited to share a beautiful new book cover with you today. Ms. Chase had her original cover redesigned and I get to let you be among the first to take a peek at it! Plus she's giving away some very fun items, so all in all, this post is made of win, yes? I knew you'd think so too. :)

Also of note, The Seahorse Legacy is already out on Amazon, but the story itself has gotten a bit of a facelift as well. Just a small one, according to Ms. Chase, but if you haven't read the series yet (why on earth not?! Here's my review of book one if you're interested) or if you haven't gotten a copy of this one, then now is the time! Plus you'll be all prepared for book four, The Sunken Realm, which should be out in late Summer. (It cannot arrive fast enough for me! I am SO excited to find out what's coming next for Erielle and Cazien! :)

So? What do you think? Kind of dark and mysterious and intriguing, isn't it? I love how their eyes stand out so brightly. And the pirate ship on the sea of red is awesome! Sailing into the sunset, perhaps? Doesn't this make you want to know what the story is about? Please say yes! Because I happen to think this series is fabulous and I'm pretty sure you will too. :)

About the Book

a Pirate, bound by a centuries-old oath

As Keeper of the Seahorse Legacy, Cazien de Pollis is a King among pirates, divinely appointed to dispense justice on the seas. Bound by the sacred oath of a long-dead ancestor, he must fulfill a contract to wed the green-eyed Oracle’s Daughter named therein—or risk losing everything he and his people hold dear. But at nineteen, with the identity of his betrothed only recently revealed, Cazien resents the contract—and the urgency within him to see it satisfied.

a Knight, determined to prove her calling

Erielle de Gladiel returned from the quest for the Remedy, changed. Not only are her formerly-blue eyes now a brilliant shade of green, but she must don gloves to hide inky evidence that her prophetically-bestowed title, the Oracle’s Daughter, demands more from her than the task already completed. Erielle’s dearest-held dream is realized when she is knighted by her King, but unbeknownst to her, that very honor jeopardizes the prophesied purpose to which she and Cazien have been called.

a Legacy, demanding surrender

Just as Cazien summons the courage to collect his bride, dark rumors and darker deeds crawl up the coasts, calling its guardians, the Seahorse Pirates, into action—and Cazien away from Erielle. But even though the Oracle’s Daughter knows nothing of the contract to which she has been consigned, Cazien’s enemies have somehow learned of his interest in Erielle. And if they reach her before his ancestor’s weighty oath is executed, the Seahorse Legacy will be forfeited . . . and darkness will be given reign.

The third book in this series-within-a series, The Seahorse Legacy begins an epic re-imagining of several fairy tales combined--including an unexpected twist on The Twelve Dancing Princesses. This romantic adventure will conclude in Eyes of E’veria, Book 4: The Sunken Realm, coming late Summer 2015.

First, I just wanted to say THANK YOU. Thank you to all who entered my giveaways. I admit to being a bit nervous that only one or two people would enter, so I was ever so pleased when so many comments came in! I sincerely wish I could send a book to all of you! :)

So! The two winners are as follows:

The Near Witch ~ Olivia

Undeniably Yours ~ Heather

I will be notifying both of you for your mailing addresses. Please note that you need to contact me back by July 1st.

Thanks again, friends! I hope your week has been delightful! :)
