Movie Quote Monday :: Persuasion

Anne: Charles, please assure Captain Wentworth and Captain Harville that we hope to see them tonight.
Charles: That was understood.
Anne:  No, I don't think so. They must come, do you hear? You'll see them again. Promise me you'll mention it.
Charles: Mention it yourself. Frederick, which way are you going?       
Frederick: I hardly know.
Charles: Are you going near Camden place? If you are, take Anne to her father's door. She's done for this morning and I'm eager to see a gun, like that double-barrel of mine you once shot with.

Oh friends. I hadn't watched this movie in quite a long time, but I stumbled upon this awesomely fun podcast the other day. These ladies talked about all the reasons why they did and didn't like both the 1995 and 2008 versions of Persuasion. And while listening, I was persuaded (see what I did there? Of course you did! ;) to watch the 1995 version again.

Oh my goodness! I am now completely convinced of this version's superiority! I mean, I always knew it was better, but I still rather liked Rupert Penry-Jones as Wentworth (because, yes, he's rather nice to look at, I freely admit it! :) from the 2008 version. But Ciaran Hinds.... Oh my stars, that man has a way of looking at Anne...!! *swoon* The podcasters mention how they noticed he never looks at her in the beginning of the movie and they were right! He looks just over her head or just past her, but never in her eyes. Until Lyme. And then he notices. Oh man does he ever notice. From there on out he holds nothing back and just stares at her... Ah my heart!!

Anyway. You're not here to listen to me gush about how Wentworth looks at Anne. (Although surely you agree with me, right?? ;) Mainly, I simply had to come over here and put it out there officially. The 1995 Persuasion is DELIGHTFUL. There is so much of the book within each scene that the filmmakers clearly understood the perfection of writerly awesomeness they were working with. And so refused to make any horrific and terrible and awful and horrifyingly, glaringly wrong choices when it came to adding or changing things up! (I'm looking at you, 2008 Persuasion filmmakers...humph.)

I will admit, that I'll probably still occasionally watch the 2008 version, purely for the pretty of Rupert of course. And there are some wonderful scenes in it. But overall, I have to officially hand the trophy of best version to 1995. WAY superior. (And I can now even admit that Ciaran is awfully handsome as well. A few years ago I'd've never in my dreams have admitted that. But I stand corrected. And happily! ;)

Movie Quote Monday :: When Calls the Heart

Elizabeth: Don’t panic.  You can do this.  You crossed a prairie, for heaven’s sake. How difficult could it be to produce a play?
*Jack walks up*
Jack:  Talking to yourself. Not a good sign.
Elizabeth:  You were eavesdropping.
Jack:  It’s not eavesdropping when one's talking to oneself out loud in public.
Elizabeth: I have to put on a Founders Day play in a week! A play that has been performed every year. A play that apparently has costumes and music and...
Jack: Come here.
*he leads her over to a place to sit*
Jack: Sit down.
*she refuses*
Jack: Sit!
*she sits grudgingly*
Jack: Now. Take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your mouth.
*he gives her a look and Elizabeth lets out a huge breath*
Jack: There! Now don't you feel better?
Elizabeth: I do.

It's been a while since I posted one of these! And since I was in the notion to rewatch the series over the weekend, I figured this was the perfect choice. :)

Obviously, I'm featuring When Calls the Heart, a TV series from Hallmark Channel. It's based off a book series by Janette Oke, only it's nothing like the books, it's telling a story all of its own. Which isn't a bad thing! Because of Jack and Elizabeth. :D These two are too cute for words! And the particular conversation I highlighted up there is one which never fails to make me giggle at their adorableness. But it also shows how well they know each other. Or, I suppose, how well Jack knows Elizabeth by this point. The two characters start out with an obvious attraction at the beginning of season one, but continue to frustrate each other to no end. As each season progresses (season four is currently airing), their attachment only grows deeper.

So yes, I will totally admit that Jack and Elizabeth are the biggest reason I love this show. Y'all know I love a good romance! ;) Yet that's not to say that the other characters and plotlines aren't entertaining, mysterious, and romantic, because they are. There is loads of fun to be had here!

I should mention that, if you haven't seen the series and are interested in watching, please be aware that historical accuracy is not its strong point. But if you can overlook that, like me, and simply enjoy the sweetness of the little town of Coal Valley (or Hope Valley, as it comes to be known later) and its myriad of very memorable characters, I don't think you'll be disappointed. :)

Declan: He bought you a suitcase?
Anna: It's a Vuitton.
Declan: What?

In honor of Leap Day, I just had to post this today! Plus Amber and I just had a Twitter-watch-along of this movie on Saturday night. (Yes, we are awesome like that. :) It's one of my favorites! The music is fabulous, Amy Adams and Matthew Goode are too adorable together, and it's just all around a great movie. It makes me laugh and swoon and turn it off with a happy sigh at the end. What more could I ask for?

Movie Quote Monday :: Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries

Phryne: What evidence do you have that it was me who broke into the bookshop?

Jack: An Hispano-Suiza parked outside at the time.

Phryne: If a tree falls in a forest...

Jack: You were very likely somewhere close by wielding the axe.

Phryne: Well... I didn’t break the window. That was done by a man in a black trench coat with a hat – the same man who attacked me when I tried to stop him stealing a book.

Jack: He attacked you?

Phryne: Well, I disturbed him. And he ran off with the book. I gave chase, and he took a shot at me, so I did the only thing I could in the circumstances.

Jack: You called for help?

Phryne: I stabbed him in the shoulder.

Jack: Oh.

I know I just mentioned this series in my last post, so I figured I should give you a taste of what life is like for Phryne. And Jack, of course! These two and their banter. :D (This quote happens to be from season 1, for the record.)

(Also I know this isn't technically a movie, but just go with it, okay?)

But truly, this series is just plain awesome! Phryne Fisher is unlike any heroine I've ever met before. She's rich, opinionated, fearless, loves a good murder mystery, a loyal friend, will do anything for those in her adopted family, and quite intelligent to boot! I know, those are qualities that have been used to describe other heroines, but trust me. Phryne is one of a kind! And while her real family gives her some fits (especially her father! as we find out in season 3), she collects a group of people around her that she trusts absolutely and loves completely and who love her just as much in return. For all that she can be a bit bossy and frustrating (especially for Jack ;), once you're in her inner circle you don't want to be anywhere else. She inspires the people around her to be better!

As for the rest of the cast, they are all amazing as well. From her trusted sidekick Dot, to Detective Inspector Jack Robinson, to Constable Hugh Collins, as well as loyal friend (and doctor) Mac, as well as Aunt Prudence. Plus all the fabulous other characters who I can't name off the top of my head! Each character takes a life of their own and they all gravitate toward and rotate around Miss Phryne Fisher herself.

(I should note that Phryne isn't afraid to show her appreciation for the males in her life, and while there's nothing truly explicit, it's also not a secret. So just be warned.)

Phryne makes the series what it is, but every character and every storyline just comes together to make a truly awesome show to watch. And after three seasons I REALLY hope we get more! :D

Movie Quote Monday {on Friday!} :: Signed, Sealed, Delivered for Christmas

Merry Christmas, my lovelies! I know that this is technically Friday and I normally would post a movie quote on Monday, but this is special circumstances. (Plus I totally meant to get this posted last Monday and it didn't happen, but that's neither here nor there... ;) Y'all know I love me some Hallmark Channel Christmas movies, so when this one came out last year, I fell in love with it. I would have to say that it's one of my favorites ever! Which is high praise, I know. But this little movie is so full of heart and delight and HOPE.

Which is why I wanted to post this quote today, because Christmas is all about hope. And in this world with numerous stories of tragedy and sadness, we all need to take a moment and remind ourselves that love and hope can make all the difference. All the difference, people!! No matter what you're going through today (and I know there are people out there that are going through some doozies right now), no matter what your circumstances may tell you, no matter how not-fun things can be, don't let go of hope. Okay? You'll get through this. So will I. There are better things coming (like some really great books and movies! ;). And if life is really awesome for you right now? Then hallelujah!

Hope is a powerful thing, my friends. I trust you're holding tight to yours today. And I truly hope your Christmas has been and is filled with wonder and joy and happiness. (As well as a story or two! :)

Movie Quote Monday :: Kate and Leopold

[Talking on the phone]
Stuart: Are you sitting down?
Kate: [standing] Yes.

I know! Kind of funny to post a picture of Kate with Leopold and then a quote of Kate with Stuart. But I love that convo! Stuart and Kate's friendship and how well they know each other is just sweet. Of course, neither of them would think so. At least not at the beginning of the movie. :) But then there's Leopold! Oh my goodness, what a gentleman! When I watched this with Amber the other weekend, I'd forgotten how much fun this movie is. And how much I wish there was an actual Leopold for me! The way he sweeps Kate off her feet? *swoon* And she's so determined to be this modern woman, but learns exactly how lovely it feels to be a bit old fashioned. This movie is too adorable! :)

Movie Quote Monday :: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

I love this movie! First of all, because ICELAND (The visuals are gorgeous, people. Just gorgeous!). But also because it has so much heart. It's a reminder to not settle for a mundane life. Watching Walter come out of his shell is wonderful. He starts out making his choices very selfishly because he wants to keep his job, but slowly he learns to truly live his life instead of just letting life happen. And that, I think, is exactly what we all should be doing. Not that we can all travel to Iceland and have epic skateboarding moments, or fight off a shark and survive, or hike huge mountains that require guides who give "mountain blessings" :D.

But just making choices every single day. Choices that cause us to step out of our comfort zones and do something a little hard and a little scary. To live! But the other thing I admire is that while Walter does change and open up, he doesn't turn into this amazing epic adventurer by the end. He's still Walter. Quiet, gentle, and slightly awkward, yet stronger and more confident. Simply put, this movie is inspiring.


It also doesn't hurt that it's beautifully shot. I mean, ICELAND (Yes. It deserves all caps. Again.). Seriously! I now want to visit this country. The geography is amazing!

I love this final scene! Actually I just love this movie period. But this scene? And JJ Feild's smile? And Keri Russell's flustered surprise? And that kiss? And "Tallyho"? And just everything!!! *swoon* :D

Movie Quote Monday :: Edition Five

I had an epic twitter-quoting rewatch of You've Got Mail with Amber recently and Courtney jumped in and asked if either of us had seen In The Good Old Summertime (since both movies are based on The Shop Around the Corner from 1940). I'd forgotten about the movie, but I had seen it several years ago. Thinking about it made me want to watch it again, so when I happened to stumble across a copy this past weekend, I was quite thrilled and snatched it up! Needless to say, I spent a very enjoyable couple hours. I do admit that I don't think it's quite as cute as You've Got Mail, but it has Judy Garland, so that makes it worth watching. The above quote made me giggle. All the conversations between these two are loads of fun! If you haven't seen it, I'd recommend. :)

Movie Quote Monday :: Edition Four

I just watched this movie last week and loved it! This quote is so lovely, I just had to share. Words are so very powerful. And yes! They are life. They speak you. What I mean is, they speak what's inside you. Who you truly are. Or, at least, they can. Words have the power to create or destroy. Just a few letters strung together, but oh what an impact they can make!

Movie Quote Monday

August Rush: Listen. Can you hear it? The music. I can hear it everywhere. In the wind...in the air...in the light. It's all around us. All you have to do is open yourself up. All you have to do...is listen.

Oh goodness. My love for this move knows no bounds! The actors (mostly Freddie Highmore, but Keri Russell and Jonathan Rhys Meyers do a great job too), the story, and most of all the music. I love how the audience can hear what August hears! The sounds that no one else notices. He hears music everywhere and it's beautiful! And the music he creates is incredible too, all so he can lead his parents back to him.

It's full of music, the love of a mother and child, swoon-worthy romance (it's subtle, but it will definitely sweep you off your feet!), and a wonderful adventure full of connections and relationships. Each person who meets August is changed by him and they, in turn, help guide him on his journey. Lovely and gorgeous and just go watch it as soon as you can! The soundtrack is pretty awesome too. Here's one of my favorite songs:

Monday Movie Quote

Patricia Graynamore: Marry me...Marry me and then jump in the volcano. What is the problem? You're afraid of the commitment? You're gonna have to love and honor me for about 30 seconds. You can't handle that?

I had forgotten about this movie until Hamlette reminded me last week. I remember a friend and I trying to decide on a movie to rent several years ago. We happened to see this one, and noticing that Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks were the stars, thought it might be cute. Well. When we finished watching it, we both looked at each other and had no words. But by the by, I decided to watch it again simply to see what I'd think a second time. That time I decided I did like it! Having seen it multiple times since, I can say I still do.

It never fails to make me laugh with Meg Ryan playing at least three different characters and Tom Hanks getting diagnosed with a brain cloud and deciding to go jump into a volcano. Yes, you read that right. Quirky is a great descriptor for this movie! But besides the laughs, this movie has several sweet moments too. If you've never seen it, I recommend trying it, but don't go into it expecting everything to make logical sense. Put your brain aside and just have fun! :D

Movie Quote Monday

Kathleen Kelly: Sometimes I wonder about my life. I lead a small life - well, valuable, but small - and sometimes I wonder, do I do it because I like it, or because I haven't been brave? So much of what I see reminds me of something I read in a book, when shouldn't it be the other way around? I don't really want an answer. I just want to send this cosmic question out into the void. So good night, dear void.

This is one of my favorite quotes from any movie! (Incidentally, this is one of my favorite movies too. Bet you didn't guess, huh?) I can't quote this whole paragraph from memory, but I always remember the last line. In fact, I even wrote a post on my thoughts about this quote back when I first started blogging last Fall. (Yes, I'm still a newbie at this whole blogging thing. :) So I do realize that I'm repeating myself. But being brave is something I'm still working on.

Besides, it's such a lovely thought, don't you think? Sending our questions out and realizing it's okay that we don't have all the answers right now. Or maybe we don't actually want an answer anyway, we just needed to get our thought out of our head and into words so it makes more sense to us. I know I need to do that pretty often. If I leave it in my head, I'll just analyze it to death and only go around in circles. My brain does silly things like that. :)
